The New Black Runway Colors – Midnight Blue and Yellow (Electrical Banana) July 8, 2012

Today I bring you “The New Black” nail polishes that I received in my May Look Bag.  The New Black is a relatively new-ish brand that brings runway fashion to you at an accessible cost. The two I was sent (Midnight Blue and Electrical Banana) were from the “Color Barometer” set which contains 8 primary colors (one is more a nude) each at 0.125 oz. They also have glitter, ombre, and newspaper print sets.

I decided to try a manicure I had completely failed at in the past, the half moon.  As you can see I still basically failed – but it is better than before and gives you a good idea of the colors of the polish.  The blue is NEARLY opaque in 1 coat and the yellow takes two coats. This lasted my normal 2 days (always remember I am SUPER rough on my nails) which puts it up there with Zoya, Opi, and Butter London.

Would I buy this product again? Yes, I am really considering getting the newsprint set so I can learn how to do that manicure with products specifically made for it before I go experimenting and getting annoyed at bad results.

Will I finish the sample? Yes, the colors are fun and very on trend right now.

Here’s the breakdown:

Sample Size: 0.25 oz (2 x 0.125)
Full Size: 1.0 oz (8 x 0.125)
Full Size Price:  $35.00
Sample Value: $8.75

Opi – Kiss Me On My Tulips July 3, 2012

Today I bring you the Opi (Kiss me on my Tulips – from the Holland collection) that I received in my May Glossy Box.

I want to start by saying I hate pink.  Yes, I am a girl, but I just never got into the color, so when I saw that I got a PINK nail polish (not pinkish orange, or pinkish yellow, or nearly red, or pinkish purple) I cringed. Then I did my dutiful blogger thing and tried it on.

Magic did occur. No, I don’t love pink all of a sudden or understand some women’s facination with the color, but I did immediately warm to this vivid color. It looked fantastic on my hands. As is typical with the OPI formula, it goes on smooth with no streaking. I could have gotten by with 1 thick coat but opted for two thinner coats. The wear lasted the typical 2 days on me (which is equivalent to about 6 for a normal person) with my standard overuse of my hands.

Will I buy this product again? Yes, Opi polishes are fabulous, and if I ran out of this one I might even buy PINK again!

Will I finish the sample? Yes – it will go into my collection immediately.

Here’s The Breakdown:

Sample Size: 0.5 oz
Full Size: 0.5 oz
Full Size Price: $8.50
Sample Value: $8.50

Sally Hansen Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips – Review – Video May 30, 2012

Today I bring you the Sally Hansen Real Nail Polish Strips that I received in the Spring Beauty box from
Check out the video below to see how easy they are to put on… It took about 20 minutes, but it was my first time doing them, also I was awkwardly working around a camera.  That is still faster than going to get a manicure and also less expensive.

The pattern actually looked real rather than printed.  I thought they were great looking, and I did get compliments.  Overall I thought they were pretty nice, and I liked how uniform they felt (compared to when I do nail art). They lasted about 2 full days before chipping, the third day the chipping was light, but I had an interview the next day, and they didn’t look good enough for first impressions so I removed them and did a simple french manicure.

Would I buy this product again? Yes, it was fun and a nice way to get pretty patterns – though I would never get the solid colors, might as well use normal polish for that price.

Will I finish the sample? Theoretically they are a one time use product, but I cut mine in half so I’ll get another use out of them – and yes I will use them again.

You can buy these for between $8 and $10.00 at pharmacies, but keep an eye out because sometimes you can get them on a “Buy one get one 1/2 off” sale, which makes them much more affordable ($6-7.50 each)

Today I bring you Pop Nail Glam in Tangerine Taste from my April Sindulge Box.  This is a great orange color and is perfect for spring.  I’m not sure about other skin tones but it goes great with mine. Again because of my nail challenge (up on Sunday) I can’t tell you about how it wears but I can say that goes on smooth and is opaque in one coat.  I am really looking forward to wearing this on my nails.

Will I buy this again? I will definitely buy more Pop  Nail Glam colors. It seems to be a great formula.

Will I finish this sample? Absolutely! It was pretty great.

Here’s the breakdown:

Sample Size: 0.5 oz
Full Size: 0.5 oz
Full Size Price:  $10.00
Sample Value: $10.00

Essie Luxeffects – Set in Stones and Color Club Neon Nail Polish – Lava Lamp March 26, 2012

Today I bring you two nail polishes I received from my two March Birchboxes, First the Essie Luxeffects in Set in Stones and Color Club in Lava Lamp.

I’ve owned a number of Essie polishes before, but never a glitter.  This one was really nice – it is pretty much opaque with 3 coats, which I can’t get with most glitters.  The color is all different sized silver hex glitters in a clear base.

Next I bring you Color Club’s Lava Lamp – it is BRIGHT orange – love it.  The cream is nice and applies evenly. In 2 coats I had full opacity. This is my first ever color club polish, and I now understand what all the hype is about.  I cannot wait to wear it in real life instead of just on my practice wheel.  As soon as my ASK challenge is over *sigh*

Finally I decided it would be neat to put the two together.  I love it. What do you think?

essie® Luxeffects Nail Polish – Set in Stones
Sample Size 0.5 oz
Full Size 0.5 oz
Full Size Price $8.00
Sample Value $8.00

Color Club Neon Nail Polish – Lava Lamp
Sample Size 0.25
Full Size 0.5 oz
Full Size Price $8.00
Sample Value $4.00

Will I buy each again? I will continue to keep purchasing Essie, and I will now be on a lookout for Color Club.

Will I finish my samples? YES!!!

Yay – Hunger Games comes out right now! So in honor of what I am certain will be an awesome movie, I will show you my swatches of my new China Glaze Capitol Colors.  Yes, I know, there a bazillion reviews of these colors – but I still wanted to share.  Unfortunately because I am taking part in the Ask Nail Challenge, I really can’t put them on my nails – but I can show you them on practice circles! yay.

Nail Polish from The Hungry Asian March 21, 2012

I saw on Chalkboard Nails a nail polish called Sneeze Breeze from The Hungry Asian. I fell in love! I went straight over to her Etsy store and then saw another amazing color, Sea Creature so I had to get both. She must have put them in the mail about 5 seconds after my payment hit because my package arrived a tidy 2 days later.  And how cute  is the package and the little pictures on the bottles?

Because I am taking part in the ASK Nail Challenge I couldn’t wear these on my nails but after the break are some photos on my practice wheel – and I did wear Sea Creature on my feet and it lasted over 2 weeks without chipping!

MyGlam January (Bag #2) Impressions and value January 23, 2012

I just got the second MyGlam bag; the January bag called “back to nature”.  It took forever due to the storm we had in WA. Anyway I was excited to finally get the bag.  What came in it?

  • Freeman Feeling Beautiful Cucumber Peel Off Mask
  • Sheer Cover Concealer in Light/Medium
  • The Balm Hot Ticket nail polish in “Sky Blue Right Past You”
  • Wen Conditioning Cleanser in Sweet Almond Mint
  • Coupons for each of the products
  • A cute makeup bag for travel

I haven’t tried the peel off mask yet, but I will probably devote an entire post to it. They sent a full size which is 6 oz and retails for $4.00.  It smells good and I can’t wait to try it.

Next is the Sheer Cover Concealer in Light/Medium. This is a full size item. It retails for $29.00. I will do a review on it later too, but I fear that it is too dark for me, especially the “Medium” side.

Influenster Holiday Vox Box – imPRESS Press-on Manicure by Broadway Nails – Space Cadet December 27, 2011

Influenster sent me some cute press on nails from Broadway nails.  They are imPress Press-on Manicure. They come in 3 dozen colors/styles from a simple french manicure all the way to a fancy water marbled look.  I was sent Space Cadet which looks sort of like a crackle coat with sparkly highlights.  They are cute – but not my first choice from the 36 offerings (but still better than the animal print which I just don’t do).

Lets start with the packaging, the nails are all contained in a little box that looks just like a polish bottle.  You twist off the top just like you would for a nail polish, but then you squeeze the sides to open the clear plastic part.  though the front holder shows only a few sizes there are TONS of different sizes so you are almost guaranteed to find ones to fit your hands.

The nails are fairly thick which makes them sturdy, but fairly heavy.  I’m also not used to my nails being this long so it is taking some adjusting to.

The application (once you’ve picked the appropriate sizes) is really simple, first you clean all your nails with the provided wipes then you just pull the clear plastic tab to remove the covering from the sticky back side and press them on your nail.  After the first 7 were on I started having an issue pulling the tabs off so I quickly learned that using a tweezer to remove the tabs worked wonderfully.

Earlier today I went to Starbucks. While I was there I got a couple compliments. One of the girls thought they were my real natural nails AND she loved the pattern.  I think that is a pretty cool compliment to the manufacturers.

As most of my readers know, nail polish rarely lasts me more than 24 hours.  How do these press-ons compare?  I’ve had them on now about 48 hours. They are still on and not peeling off my nail like polish does.   I did however experience chipping of the actual pattern. I’m not sure if this is normal but it did sort of ruin the whole perfect looking nail thing.

As you can see the chipping is probably on 10% of the whole pattern, which doesn’t seem like it should happen.  Owell – still this is better than the whole coat of polish peeling off.

Overall verdict?  I’d sure be open to trying them again (actually I might be able to make a full set from my leftovers too) but I’d like to see the polish last more than a day and a half.

I still challenge you to find me nails that will last me more than 2 days and still look fresh!

UPDATE: 12/29: I woke up this morning with two nails having committed suicide in my sheets.  I took the remaining 8 nails off – which was easy and straightforward.  As I’ve said previously, I am really really hard on my nails, so this surpassed my expectations.
