Purely Cosmetics – Mineral Foundation – Neutral Light May 8, 2012

Today I bring you Purely Cosmetics Mineral Foundation in neutral-light. This finely milled powder is lightweight and strongly pigmented. It spreads evenly and is picked up quite easily with my brushes. The brand says that it is best for normal to oily skin (which is about 85% of my face).

The powder keeps my skin shine free. It lasted most of the day. Overall it seems to be a pretty nice formula. It doesn’t work for me though, it is too dark. My skin is so pale that it was too dark, but not dark enough to use as a bronzer. I wore it for one day at home so I could review it. I’ll keep it around in case I get a bit of a tan this summer.

Will I buy this again? No, this was the lightest color, and it was not light enough for me.

Will I finish the sample? I’ll keep it around in case I get a tan.

Sample Size: 0.1 oz
Full Size: 0.21 oz
Full Size Price: $18.00
Sample Value: $8.57

Chella – Razor with Brush and Comb May 7, 2012

Today I bring you the Chella, Razor with Brush and Comb from my April Beauty Army Kit.  Beauty Army recently rolled out a new “tools” section of their site and this was one of the first products in that section.

This tool has a brow brush, comb, and razor. The razor slides into the clear plastic top so you don’t accidentally cut anything unintentionally. Incidentally the pointy end (opposite the blade) is good for separating eyelashes.

How does it work? Just fine – the razor is a little tough for me to use,  you are supposed to stroke the razor lightly against the grain of the hair’s directional growth. I find that my cuticle scissors work better for this. The brush and comb are just as good as any other ones I’ve tried.

Overall it does what it is supposed to, and if you want to bring just one tool on a long trip for your brows this would do it for you, but if you have the money to buy a good pair of tiny scissors that really is the better route.

Will I buy this again? Maybe, only if I wear out the brush or comb.

Will I finish the sample? I’ll keep using it until it wears out.

Here’s the breakdown:

Sample Size: 1 razor with brush and comb
Full Size: 1 razor with brush and comb
Full Size Price:  $10.00
Sample Value: $10.00

Beauty Army’s first ever exclusive product was launched this month and was available in the April kits. I happened to choose it, and realized it was totally new when I tried to find pricing to give you in my initial impressions post. I’ve since gotten the information and it is now also available on the Beauty Army site to purchase the full size product.  What product is this, you ask? (more…)

Aquolina – Pink Sugar Body Mousse – Review May 4, 2012

Today I bring you Aquolina Pink Sugar Body Mousse from my April Beauty Army Kit. This is a light pink jiggly cream that goes on pretty smooth. This is one of those samples that comes in a foil packet. I put this in one of my jars so that I could re-seal the product and use it lots of times. This little sample gave me about 15 uses on my full legs. It is hydrating and leaves my skin feeling nice. It has a mild scent which is just fine for a body lotion, it is a light flowery scent.  Overall while I did like this and used the entire sample, I do prefer my  whipped cream from Fortune cookie soap.

Will I get this again? Probably not – I’ll stick with the Fortune cookie soap whipped cream/body butter.

Will I finish the sample? I just finished it last night – it went a long way.

Here’s the breakdown:

Sample Size: 0.68
Full Size: 8.45 oz
Full Size Price:  $30.00
Sample Value: $2.41

Babor Hy-Oil Cleansing Set – Review April 18, 2012

Today I bring you Babor Hy-Oil Cleansing Set. This was part of my April Beauty Army kit. This is part of the cleansing with oil bandwagon. Babor claims that this is a water soluble oil that dissolves away water and oil soluble makeup and leaves no oily residue. The Hy-oil and phytoactive base are sold separately and can be customized for your skin type.

These oils are both a light thin consistency. Now I have a background in engineering so when I read that this oil is water soluble I scratched my head. I did some research and some oils can allow water to exist within it but it is not really removed by water so much as it incorporates the water. I suspect that the phytoactive base breaks down some of the oil instead.

When used according to the directions (the hy oil first and the phytoactive base second) you create a almost milky like look on your face – it is really subtle, but it is not the completely clear look of the Hy-Oil or the amber look of the base.   You are then supposed to wash it off with water.  I did this and it didn’t feel like it washed off – the milkiness was gone, but that slick feeling was still there. It was not greasy per-se but it did feel more slick than my natural skin.  I didn’t like that feeling.

I have used it about 5 times at this point. It cleans well and has not caused any skin problems. I think it is a nice quality product.  That being said, I do not like it – I can’t get past the slick feeling – I feel like I need to use one of my normal cleansers afterward.

Will I buy it again? No – like I said, its just not for me

Will I finish the sample? No – I’ve now given it a fair shot and I have plenty of cleanser samples to try, and lots of full size ones too so there is no reason to keep this around.

Here’s the breakdown:

Sample Size: 0.62 oz (2 x 0.31 oz bottles)
Full Size: 6.8 oz + 3.3 oz
Full Size Price: $32.00 + $28.00
Sample Value:  $3.68

Pūr-lisse Pūr-lips comfort – Review April 14, 2012

Today I bring you Pūr-lisse Pūr-lips comfort lip balm from my April Beauty Army kit. This one was actually kind of funny as it is a full size+ sample – in that what they sell at Beauty Army is 0.38 oz and I received a 0.5 oz sample. SCORE!!!

This balm has the consistency of petroleum jelly. It contains vitamin E and white tea to nourish, hydrate, and soften. It DOES NOT contain petroleum.

How does it work? I’d say it works similar to using a normal Vaseline product. It feels food for the time it is fully on the lip but the moment it begins to rub off all soothing effects go away.

I’m going to be leaving it at work to use in the cases where I leave lip product at home accidentally. It is good enough to keep around, but not good enough to replace any current products.

Would I buy it again? No, it is quite expensive and does no better than my $3.00 Burt’s Bees.

Will I finish the sample? Yes, it is good enough to keep using, it is no worse than my Burt’s Bees either, just $16 vs $3…. I can do math.

Here’s the breakdown:

Sample Size: 0.5 oz
Full Size: 0.38 oz (Some sites sell the 0.5 oz)
Full Size Price:  $16.00 ($22.00 on the sites that sell the larger size)
Sample Value: $22.00

Saturday I received a timid knock at my front door and I look out and on my doorstep is a little black box. It has pink letters on it. I squeel with delight. It is my Beauty Army Kit that I had ordered just 6 days earlier!  Beauty Army got a facelift to their shipping boxes which looks awesome and they still have the great reusable boxes. Also just this past week they announced that they will be allowing members to skip a month if they don’t like what is available – thats pretty neat! Hopefully I don’t ever feel the need to use it – but good to know its there if I do.  So, anyway, what did I get this month?

My March Beauty Army Kit – Wrap Up April 4, 2012

I’ve had a chance to use and review all of the products from my March and decide on how much I liked them. So now it is time to do my box wrap up.

In case you don’t remember, here is a summary of the Awesomeness level:

Box Awesomeness Level Review (AL)

  • 5 points for an item that surpasses everything else I’ve tried and becomes my #1 choice for what role it fulfills
  • 4 points for an item that becomes added to my permanent collection of cosmetics and I will repurchase
  • 3 points for an item that joins my “I might buy this again” list
  • 2 points for an item I finished or will finish the entire sample of but in the end decided not to re-purchase
  • 1 point for an item that I tried and immediately threw out/gave away
  • 0 points if the item was a duplicate of something from a previous bag/box/kit that only scored a 1 in that box – meaning I knew enough to not even bother with trying it.

MAD Skincare Eye Defense Shielding Serum – Review

Today I bring you the final product from my March Beauty Army Kit, the MAD Skincare Eye Defense Shielding Serum.  To start with I had a really hard time starting to test this product because of the little pump dispenser it uses didn’t want to dispense the product. After turning the dispenser upside down and leaving it that way for a couple days I was finally able to get product out. Now I understand why the product was not coming out.

This serum is a thick gel that reminds me of petroleum jelly. It has no real scent and rubs in smooth – but does not seem to be instantly absorbed or anything like that. I think it probably works well, in that I didn’t see anything change in the appearance around my eyes while I used it, but it is hard to tell because the Lift Lab cream I’ve been using has done such a good job that I can’t really see many fine lines anymore.

Would I buy this product again? Probably not – I really love my Lift Lab eye cream

Will I finish the sample? Sure – it works pretty well.

Here is the breakdown:

Sample Size: 0.13 oz
Full Size: 0.5 oz
Full Size Price:  $54.00
Sample Value: $14.04

Weleda Iris Hydrating Day Cream – Review April 3, 2012

Tags: , ,

A few weeks ago I brought you the Weleda Iris hydrating facial lotion that I received from Beauty Army. During March I received another product from Weleda, the Iris Hydrating Day Cream. The first one was pretty good so I expected similar results from this one.

I am not much of a day cream person because my BB cream is moisturizing and has an SPF so I never really felt a need to use an additional product. But I figured I have it so I’ll give it a go.

This cream has a thick consistency and an off white, almost yellow color.  The cream spreads thin and is absorbed quickly. It feels light weight.

Like the hydrating facial lotion it worked well in my normal and oily areas, but where my skin was dry it just didn’t moisturize enough.

Will I get it again? No, like I said my BB cream does everything this does and more.

Will I finish the sample? Sure, it was good, just not good enough to buy again.

Here’s the breakdown:

Sample Size: 0.17 oz
Full Size: 1 oz
Full Size Price:  $20.00
Sample Value: $3.40
