Befine Night Cream Review January 31, 2012

In my January Birch Box I received Befine Night Cream. This cream is supposed to help repair damage to skin and provide nourishment while you sleap.  It has some natural ingredients which I can actually pronounce which is always nice. So I went ahead and tried it.

The directions indicate that proper use is to wash your face at night and then apply generously all over your face

The white cream is a fairly normal thickness, not incredibly thick or thin. It spreads over the skin easily and is readily absorbed into (my) skin. There is no real fragrance to speak of, which is good for a night cream.

As usual with any new skin care product I gave it a full week for my skin to get used to it. After a week I still experienced extra breakouts. My skin is naturally a combination between oily, normal, and dry, and in my oily spots this just exasperated the problem.  Right now with my current skin condition this is not the right product for me.  Is it a bad product? No, the product is just fine, just my skin is not the right match for the product.

Because this is not the right product for me I cannot speak to whether it lives up to its promises to repair and nourish skin.

VMV Hypoallergenics Re-Everything Eye Serum Review

As part of my January Birchbox I received this VMV Hypoallergenics Re-Everything Eye Serum. The company claims the serum will “zap puffiness, dark circles, and fine lines.” VMV also says that there is an immediate payoff.

The cream has a thin yellow consistency. To me it feels like it sort of just sits on top of my skin and doesn’t seem to be absorbed much. I can see how that would make it appear to have an immediate payoff, the cream would sit inside the fine lines and would just appear to even out the skin in that area.

Does it work? I didn’t notice any measurable difference or any immediate relief from puffiness or circles. That doesn’t mean that it fails, it just means I didn’t see anything. I will probably continue using this until the sample is empty and rotate it out with my Lift Lab eye cream.

I’ll keep using it and report back if I see any improvements from it over the long haul.

stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner January 29, 2012

As part of my January Birchbox I received stila Smudge stick in Blue Ribbon. This was my absolute favorite part of the January box. This by itself was worth $20.00 making the birchbox fully worth every penny of the $10.00 I paid for it.

So what do I think of the smudge stick? I love it, I love nearly everything about it.  Lets start with my one and only complaint. The packaging. I could not get the pencil tip to extend at first, and then once I did it jumped out a lot and broke off about 1/4 inch of the pencil.  The important stuff? This smudge stick goes on incredibly smooth. There is a tiny bit of glitter in this particular color but you don’t really see it on the eye. On the eye it has a pearl like sheen.

The color (Blue Ribbon) is unbelievable. It is the perfect blue for me. It is a blue grey. It kinda reminds me of the skies in Seattle. It doesn’t detract from my actual eye color at all like many blue products do. The grey in it also makes it perfect for not looking too flashy at work.

Stila claims the smudge stick is waterproof. It made it through a full shower without movement at all. Even after patting my face dry after the shower it stayed on like a champ.

I now have a new go-to pencil style eyeliner. I am still partial to my cream/gels but this is a close second.

What is your favorite eyeliner?

Science and Beauty January 28, 2012

Filed under: General — slagoon @ 4:59 pm

Ladies, If you are heading to college here is something you may want to think about, Beauty is Science.  Science doesn’t usually seem all that glamorous but it is what creates glamour. Creating colors that will stay on all day, or a clear gel that will turn to a natural flush when applied to the skin are both chemistry.

Think about the differences between nail polishes. Some will dry instantly, some will be matte, some will not chip-ever.  How do the companies get such different formulas? They have scientists who look all the way down to the molecules to figure out what will happen when they tweak just one little thing.

Then there are all the skincare products, anti-aging creams, anti-rosacia treatments, acne ointments.  All of these are chemically engineered to give the best possible results.

Even if you don’t decide to go into a science field (or already have a career of your own) science can still be helpful.

I mentioned in my last post that fragrances will smell different depending on who wears it.  If you understand the science behind fragrances you understand that you need to know how your fragrances react to you. If you are going to be out in the hot sun you need something that will be ok if you happen to perspire.  You also would then know you probably shouldn’t eat much garlic before wearing a fragrance.

You can also figure out tricks: If you have a thick product that you can’t get out of the bottle you can heat some water and submerge your bottle in that hot water. That simple act will change the viscosity (thickness) of the product in the bottle. The heat will make it less viscous (thinner).

There’s more and I’m sure now you will find science everywhere.

I am unapologetically an engineer – hope this didn’t bore you too much.

January Birchbox “Clarity” FINALLY arrived January 27, 2012

Yay!  My January Birchbox just arrived on the 24th! It stinks that it took so long, but I suppose that is the deal you get when Mother Nature throws you her worst. We were snowed in for nearly a week and without power for a couple days but this and my other samples all have made the month much more tolerable.

Don’t worry I will do a review of each of the products (except the granola and the fragrance which I will describe here).

So, was it worth the $10 this month?

New York Color Liquid Lipshine More colors January 25, 2012

If you remember I received a New York Color Liquid Lipshine in #582 Nude York City from www.influenster.com to try. I really did love it so much that the other day when at Rite Aid picking up prescriptions I looked for the NYC cosmetsics end-cap. They had one, and it was pretty picked over – BUT I’m totally excited to say they did have 4 colors I didn’t already have. Obviously I snatched them up immediately (Actually I ended up with one more that was a dupe since it was put in the wrong part of the display – that will be another item in my  upcoming giveaway).

The formula on each of these is just as awesome as the first one I used. It was not sticky. It was not clumpy. It was just smooth and even a little nourishing. Most of my glosses tend to dry out my lips, but even in this harsh dry winter my lips feel pretty good.  I have to re-apply these every two hours or so, which is pretty typical for me, I tend to rub my lips alot.

The colors pictured are

  • 575 Brighton Beach Peach
  • 582  Nude York City (from Influenster)
  • 581 Midtown Mulberry
  • 584 Honey on the Hudson
  • 579 Fashion Avenue Fuchsia

My very favorite is the Honey on the Hudson. It looks a lot like a darker version of my own lips (with shimmer!). The shearest is by far the New York Nude. The remaining glosses are very pigmented, nearly opaque. Below are swatches of each of the colors.

Would I purchase these again? Yes, I am still looking for the remaining colors I don’t have.

What gloss do you rock?
