I want to talk to you today about Tuna. Specifically yellow-fin or Ahi tuna. It is tasty and really good for you. According to various sources tunacan help lower your blood pressure, reduce cholesterol, reduce your risk of coronary heart disease, and aid in Alzheimer’s disease prevention.

I typically eat tuna at my favorite sushi place and cook salmon at home, but I was getting tired of salmon so when I saw that the local grocery store had some yellow-fin tuna steaks I jumped. They were sushi grade so I knew what I’d have to make – Seared Tuna. My fiance has never had sushi, so I thought this might be a neat way to break him into the experience.

Here’s what I did:

  • In a plastic bag I added 1/8 cup of lemon juice (real lemon brand) and 3 tablespoons of soy sauce and let the tuna steaks marinate for about 45 minutes.
  • I got out a big skillett, added some olive oil, not much, and turned the burner on high/medium-high.
  • After about 8 minutes I checked to make sure the skillett was hot enough by dropping a tiny drop of water in it and waiting for the sizzle.
  • Since the skillett was hot I placed both of my 2 tuna steaks there to cook. (be careful here because the oil will jump up and spit at you and its hot!)
  • After 1 minute 30 seconds I flipped the steaks over to sear the other side.
  • After another 1 minute 30 seconds I took the fish off the skillett and quickly cut the pieces into about 1/4 inch pieces and arranged them on the plate.

As you can see from my photo I served the tuna with a zucchini squash and mushroom meadley, and some lightly buttered rice. Overall this meal cost ~$14.00 total, with $11.00 of it being the two 1/2 lb tuna steaks. It only took ~20 minutes to prepare (after the marinating and most of that is steaming the rice).

What’s your favorite way to eat tuna?
